Finally, the new station will be a broad teaching center. In that respect it will be only carrying on its proud heritage. From the days of Hiram Mills the Experiment Station has been a goal of visiting scientists from all over the world. On the pages of its "Visitors' Book" are the names of the world's great sanitary leaders. Since October 13, 1890, this visitors' register has been maintained in the Experiment Station. While not all visitors registered, we have the names of over 4,300 persons representing every State in the Union and some 60 foreign countries.

The first name in the register is that of the late Harrison P. Eddy, who later became one of the founders of the well-known sanitary engineering firm of Metcalf & Eddy. Reading the many other names contained in the register makes one feel like he is reading a volume of "Who's Who" in the sanitary engineering field on a global basis.

Over 4oo visitors were registered from the following foreign countries and their colonial possessions:

Argentina Australia Austria Belgium Bolivia Brazil Bulgaria Canada Ceylon Chile China Colombia Costa Rica Cuba Czechoslovakia Denmark Dominican Republic Ecuador Egypt El Salvador England France Germany Greece Guatemala Haiti Holland Honduras Hungary Ireland India Italy Jamaica Japan Korea Mauritius Mexico Nicaragua Norway New Zealand Palestine Panama Peru Philippine Islands Poland Romania Russia Scotland Siam Spain South Africa Sweden Switzerland Syria Trinidad Turkey Uruguay Venezuela Yugoslavia

Visiting scientists will of course be welcomed as in the past and all that the staff of the Station has discovered pertinent to their inquiries will be made known to them. But the new Station will also undertake part of the training of young students preparing to enter the several fields of environmental sanitation. In this way it will return in essence, to its earlier eminence when "Sedgwick's boys" came almost as a recognized part of the training to work under Hiram Mills' watchful eye until they were ready to go out into the world of sanitary science.
