English: Based on the Blériot XI, this monoplane was built from scratch by teenage brothers Jules and Frank VanDersarl of Denver, Colorado. It first flew in June 1911 but when the brothers moved on to later aircraft they retained the Blériot in store. After the second of the brothers passed away in 1977, the unrestored aeroplane went on display at the Museum of New Mexico. It was purchased in 2009 by the late Javier Arango, the founder of ‘The Aeroplane Collection’ at Paso Robles, California. He carried out a sympathetic restoration, replacing as little as possible. It flew again in 2012, 101 years after it first flew and was donated to the Smithsonian Institute by the Arango family in 2017.
Seen on display in the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia 15th March 2018 |
