Description
English: The switching yard of the Central Railroad of New Jersey ran on the east side of the Lehigh River, next to the Lehigh Canal in East Allentown. This photo of the yard from about 1920 shows several 'retarders', which were there to slow down free-rolling freight cars as they were being sorted. After the cars ran over the retarders, they were sent to the tracks in the background to make up trains.
