English: J Birney Crum Allentown PA

J Birney Crum (1899-1981) was a head football and basketball coach at Allentown High School between 1923 and 1948. He earned national recognition while at AHS when his football teams compiled a 186-48 record including six undefeated seasons. In basketballl, Crum's teams had a 400-106 record, winning Pennsylvania state championships in 1935, 1945, 1946 and 1947.

Born in Alton, Illinois, he came to Allentown in 1919 to study at Muhlenburg College. He was a 1923 graduate. and was a star athlete in football, basketball and baseball. In 1954, he returned as basketball coach for Muhlenburg college, compiling a 78-70 record. He then became an executive at Wetherhold and Metzger Co., in Allentown, retiring in 1964. In 1975, he was honored by being inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
