Summary edit

Description
English: A ceremonial arrow and a form for making a Native American a citizen of the United States, on display at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana. The paternalistic attitude of the U.S. government toward Native Americans led "tribal agents" (those federal officials assigned to dole out food, clothing, housing, and seed to Native Americans on reservations) to create a unique ceremony and attendant paperwork that mimicked Native American spiritual ceremonies. This, they thought, would induce Native Americans to more readily assimilate into white culture. The ceremony was in use from the 1870s to 1923.
