The Shakers trace their beginnings to Manchester, England, in 1747. The Hancock Shaker Village started in the 1780s. The Shaker population reached its peak in the mid-1800s, with an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 Shakers. Today, the last Shaker community, Sabbathday Lake in Maine, has three members.
