Description
English: Sears and Roebuck Building - 129-133 North Seventh Street in 1929. Opened in 1927, the building replaced the Lafayette Hotel, which had burned down on the site in 1926.

Sears was just one of the many national retail chains that opened in Allentown in the early part of the Twentieth Century. Sears began in 1886 by Richard W Sears and Alveh C Roebuck, and the firm was well-known for its catalog buisness when the store opened on North Seventh Street.

The store offered auto accessories, hardware, paints and other goods. It left this location in 1948 after World War II into a larger building at Seventh and Allen Streets, which included a separate farm store, auto service store and a plant store. It moved again in 1966 to the then-new Whitehall Mall.

After Sears moved out, the building was taken over by the Ace Hotel & Bar Supply Company, operated by Benjamin Wiener and his family. In 1985, the business was closed and moved to Philadelphia. The property was taken over by a parking lot operator, who tore down the structure in December 1985. It remains a parking lot today.
