Description1950s mobile 'phone mast - geograph.org.uk - 1095122.jpg |
English: 1950s mobile 'phone mast One of the floodlight pylons at Edgar Street, which will probably survive the rebuilding of the ground, should that ever happen. The pylons were made locally by Painter's who had a pylon building factory just north of here. They were amongst the first installed at any football ground. There is a rumour that they were first erected at the 1951 Festival of Britain and later moved back home to Hereford. I have no evidence for this. Beyond the field, is the extension to a 1960s stand, containing the laundry (hard work when your shirts are white) and the low terrace of the Blackfriars end. The corner is occupied by the ruin of the social club, burnt down in some sort of protection scam in the 1990s. |
