Summary

edit
Description In 1962 Briggs Cunningham asked Maserati to design a prototype for that year's Le Mans 24 Hours. in response Giulio Alfieri designed one of the most spectacular-looking Maseratis ever: the Tipo 151 coupe. Tipo 151.002 was built for Maserati France and the 151.004 and 151.006 went to Cunningham. The 4-liter V8 engine, fed by four 45IDM down-draft Webers [carburetors] was placed in a sturdy tubular chassis and clothed in a coupe body good for over 185 mph on the Mulsanne straight. Walt Hansgen and Bruce McLaren drove 151.004 and Bill Kimberly and Dick Thompson had this car, 151.006. Although the Tipo 151s were the fastest cars, the complicated rear suspension prevented them from placing higher than third on the grid and all retired from the race. Cunningham raced this car a few more times before selling it. After tragic accidents the other two were both wrecked; this is the only survivor of the original three chassis. Its current owner acquired it in 2006 and has entered is in historic race meetings, often driven by Derek Hill [son of F1 champion Phil Hill].
