Summary edit

Description

English: VT 18.16-175 005.Dresden Hauptbahnhof: New express trains were needed for the first international route Berlin - Prague of the Deutsche Reichsbahn after World War II. Old trains acquired from the Deutsche Bundesbahn were not enough. For example, the VT 18.16 was developed at VEB Waggonbau Görlitz from 1962 onwards, which was obvious because the former Waggon- und Maschinenbau-AG Görlitz (WUMAG) had already developed the famous "Flying Hamburger".

This railcar with up to four intermediate cars was used as the "Vindobona" Berlin - Prague (CSSR) - Vienna (Austria), from May 21, 1968 it was used as the "Berlinaren" on the Berlin - Malmö (Sweden) route with a ferry passage from Saßnitz to Trelleborg (Sweden). In the end this train ran as "Karlex" Berlin - Karlovy Vary (CSSR) and as "Karola" Leipzig - Karlovy Vary (CSSR).

By 2003, all 8 multiple units had been taken out of service.
