Description
English: The Royal Court (Cour Royale), the plaza leading to the main entrance.

Versailles began as a hunting lodge built in 1623 by Louis XIII (1601-1643; reigned 1610-1643). The “Sun King,” Louis XIV (1638-1715; reigned 1643-1715), expanded it into a palace starting around 1661 and continuing until his death in 1715.

In 1833 Louis-Philippe d’Orléans (1773-1850; reigned 1830-1848) changed the status of Versailles from Royal residence (although not used as such after the French Revolution in 1789) to a new role as the Museum of the History of France (Musée de l'Histoire de France) dedicated “to all the glories of France.”

The Palace and Park of Versailles were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
