Note: The Proton CARES is a limited edition derivative of the Saga Iswara family. It is said that only 200 units were made in November/ December 1992 (in both saloon and Aeroback guises), and all 200 were snapped up within the first two days on sale.

The Proton CARES is essentially a rebranded Proton MPI (U.K.-specification Proton Saga Iswara).

Like its MPI cousin, the CARES came with the new multi-point fuel injection system (as opposed to the old carburetor unit in the regular Iswara) and the original Lancer Fiore dashboard (as opposed to Proton's own design). All 200 units featured the 1.5-litre 4G15P engine mated to the 3-speed automatic. The metallic green paint is also exclusive to the CARES.

The name 'CARES' is an acronym for Clean Air Regulated Emission System. It's also a play on the word 'cares' (in this case, for the environment), as Proton wanted to highlight the reduced exhaust emissions courtesy of fuel injection technology (previously, all Protons had carburetors). The green paint colour also hints at the car's environmentally friendly motives.
