Description1st Night 2023 - Kigali, Rwanda Chabad of Kigalia Hanukkah awareness campaign.jpg |
English: A public menorah stands outside the Chabad of Kigali, Rwanda. The public menorah is part of Chabad-Lubavitch's worldwide Hanukkah awareness campaign that includes 15,000 large public menorahs in more than 100 countries around the world, including in front of landmarks such as the White House, the Eiffel Tower, and Trafalgar Square in London.
The campaign was launched in 1973 by the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, the most influential rabbi in modern history, forever altering the awareness and practice of the festival. The campaign highlights the central theme of the holiday — publicizing the story of the Hanukkah miracle -- and encourages the main practice of lighting one's own menorah at home. This year has seen a surge in public Chanukah displays, with Jews celebrating the holiday with more confidence and resolve than ever before. Amid war in Israel and rising antisemitism, the worldwide Jewish community has experienced a spiritual awakening and an increased sense of Jewish pride. During these eight days, Chabad-Lubavitch's Hanukkah campaign will reach an estimated 8 million Jews in more than 100 countries—more than half the worldwide Jewish population.
