Summary edit

This battlefield monument in Virginia is the location of the first battle of the American Civil War that took place in July of 1861. Union forces thought they would easily sweep the Confederates from the field and that the war would be over in just a few weeks if not days. Instead the Confederates forced the Union forces to retreat in a rout, including onlookers from nearby Washington, DC that had come out for the day to picnic and watch the battle.
