Title |
1st century Roman brooch |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete copper alloy Romano-British ‘Colchester’ two piece type brooch. The wings of this brooch are complete, semicylindrical and plain. Behind the head is a lug pierced with two circular perforations. This holds part of the copper alloy spring coil and the external spring chord which are extremely fragmentary and only remain to one side of the lug. The pin shaft is entirely missing. Running from the head onto the bow is a very slight crest. The bow is complete, tapering and ends without a foot knob. It is semicircular in section. It is poorly decorated with an incised line that runs off centre from one side of the crest and ends approximately a third of the way along the bow. The incised line is crossed by oblique strokes. The curled catchplate is complete and solid with a groove for the pin. The original surface remains and has an even mid green patina (the brooch has been treated since discovery). The spring remains are bright green with corrosion. The brooch has a surviving length of 37.34mm, is 13.5mm across the wings, 4.34mm wide across the bow, is 1.98mm thick and weighs 2.93g. Given the very slight profile of the crest and the lack of moulding, this brooch is probably a Colchester type BB brooch and as such dates to between 65-80AD. An example with a similar decoration can be seen in Crummy 1983, figure 6 number 53. |
