Description

Das Kütertor gehörte einst zu den zehn Stralsunder Stadttoren. Dieses und das Kniepertor sind die einzig erhalten gebliebenen Stadttore. Seinen Namen hat es von den Kütern, den Fleischern, die die Innereien der Tiere (Küt) verarbeiteten.

1446 wurde das in seiner heutigen Form zu sehende Tor neuerrichtet. Bis zum Jahr 1882 wurde das Stadttor sogar als Gefängnis genutzt, danach zu Wohnzwecken umgebaut. Das Kütertor ist Bestandteil der ehemaligen Stadtbefestigung und gehört zum Kernbereich des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes »Historische Altstadt Stralsund und Wismar«. Hier muss aber noch einiges an den Bauwerken getan werden.
