Description

Die Anfänge des großen in Backsteingotik errichteten Profanbaues führen bis ins 13. Jahrhundert zurück und waren von Anfang an als 4-flügelige Anlage konzipiert. Das Rathaus war auch als sog. »Schauhaus« bezeichnet. Hier versammelte sich nicht nur der Rat der Stadt, die Räume waren lange auch von regem Geschäftsleben erfüllt. Das Gebäude war ursprünglich als Kaufhaus zugleich auch Handelszentrum der Stadt. Die große Schauwand mit den Türmchen dürfte nach 1370 entstanden sein.

Im Inneren der in sich geschlossen Anlage befinden sich zwei Laubenhallen sowie eine Galerie, die sich über zwei Etagen erstreckt.

Von Anfang der 1990er Jahre bis hin ins neue Jahrtausend wurde das Rathaus aufwändig restauriert.
