Title
2009 T59 Coin hoard obverse
Description
English: British Museum Report on Treasure Case 2009 T59 "I have examined 30 coins reported found at North Cave, East Riding. All but one are silver coins of the English Short Cross type, in production 1180 to 1247, mostly full pennies but also with three cut halfpennies (smaller denominations were created by cutting pennies into halves or quarters, to make halfpennies and farthings). The remaining coin is a penny of the equivalent Scottish coinage, struck to the same standards and relatively commonly found in English currency in the 13th century, especially in the north of England. All of the coins will be of over 90% fine metal.

The Short Cross coinage was in production for eight decades with essentially the same design and inscriptions (Henricus Rex - King Henry - on the front), regardless of who was in fact king. The coinage has been broken down by modern scholars into classes, which can be dated more precisely. The coinage was produced by authorised moneyers operating in a range of towns across the country: the inscriptions on the back of the coins name these. The accompanying catalogue provides details of the classes, moneyers and mint towns represented.

The coins belong to a relatively tight period of output, c. 1205-15. 1205 saw a partial recoinage that removed light-weight older Short Cross coins from currency, so groups of coins deposited after than date mostly consist of the newer types, classes 5 to 8. Sites where coins have been lost individually across the Short Cross period are much more balanced in their range of classes and also have a majority of cut fractions. It seems clear, therefore, that this group of coins was a single deposit, made in or soon after 1215. It is my opinion, therefore, that this find fulfils the criteria of Treasure, according to the terms of the Act.
