Summary edit

Description Michael Popp (pronounced Pope) shows cotton plants at various stages of development at Popp Farms 05 El Campo, TX on Jun. 20, 2013. Michael is a junior partner in the 2,400-acre operation, which grows cotton and milo (grain sorghum). The cotton flower starts as a square bud, then a white flower blossoms, turning red, then falls off leaving the boll to grow and eventually opens to reveal the cotton locks, ready to be harvested and processed in a cotton gin. Flowers first occur at the bottom and mature upwards along the plant. The farms are part of the United Agricultural Cooperative, Incorporated. USDA Photo by Lance Cheung.
