Summary edit

Description The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Wildlife Services (WS) aids in the recovery of endangered Mexican gray wolves in New Mexico and Arizona through research and damage management activities. Scientists at USDA APHIS WS National Wildlife Research Center developed a method for estimating wild Mexican gray wolf populations using a modified “mark-recapture” strategy. Instead of capturing, marking, and releasing animals, the technique identifies individuals using genetic material from fecal samples. The technique allows the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state management agencies, and tribes to monitor recovery populations without having to see or handle animals. USDA APHIS WS photo.
