Description Pellaea mucronata—bird's foot fern. Mucronate means pointed, a diagnostic feature for the pinnae of this species. The back (or abaxial) side is illustrated in this photo showing the recurved nature of the segments. Bird's foot fern is found throughout California except on the desert floors. The fern thrives in a wide range of temperatures from well below freezing to about as hot as it can get. The plant photographed is locate at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
