Summary
editDescription20150708 - 77 - Marathon, Ont. - Peninsula Drive.jpg |
English: A view westward along Peninsula Drive near the center of Marathon, Ontario, Canada as seen on a July 2015 afternoon. Though its surroundings are among the most majestic along Northern Ontario's stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway, the town itself has an oddly decentralized feel - as they say, there's no "there" there. Its relative newness might serve as an explanation: though its "official" founding was in 1883 as Peninsula Harbour, a temporary housing camp for construction workers on the Canadian Pacific Railway, the continuous presence of a settlement here only traces back to 1946, when the Marathon Pulp and Paper Mill opened for business and the company town of the same name began to coalesce around it. |
