Description
English: Idle since 2009 is the former Marathon Pulp & Paper Mill in Marathon, Ontario, Canada, as seen on a July 2015 afternoon from near its entrance on Winton Street. The raison d'être and onetime economic lifeblood of the town, the mill was built in 1946, about a decade after the local forests came to the attention of the logging industry. After its purchase by the American Can Company in 1957, the mill was modernized with then-state-of-the-art technology and went on to persevere through decades of industry contraction, earning itself the affectionate nickname "the little engine that could" before ultimately shutting down due to the bankruptcy of its owners. With a workforce of 240 employees at the time, its closure was a heavy blow to the local economy, which thankfully beginning in the 1980s had begun to diversify largely due to the opening of the Barrick gold mines in nearby Hemlo. The mill was demolished only a few months after this photo was taken, and after a thorough environmental remediation the site is now proposed for redevelopment.
