Summary

edit
Description These are samples of biofuels produced from algae. Algae are another source as a sustainable feedstock for biofuels in several ways. The energy-dense oil fraction can be extracted and converted as a replacement for biodiesel and as a substitute for crude oil at the front end of a refinery. Algae are also a potential feedstock for the traditional fermentation process in the production of fuel ethanol. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack toured the BioProcess Algae facility at Green Plains Renewable Energy (GPRE), Inc. on Friday, Apr. 5, 2011 in Shenandoah, IA. USDA photo by Lance Cheung.
