Description

We encounter two boys, one with a very creative homemade toy but who should really be in school, in a small village just up the road from The Rainforest Ecolodge. The village of Indian Tamil tea-estate workers is supported by the Ecolodge and by U.S. AID.

After tea plantations were introduced to British Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1867, Tamils from South India were brought over to perform the work that the local Sinhalese did not want to do. Distinct from and of lower caste than Sri Lankan Tamils, ‘Plantation Tamils’ continue to be a disadvantaged population.
