Jaen Street, named after the revolutionary Apollinar Jaén, is the best-preserved colonial street in La Paz. The houses date from the 18th century. One of the homes was owned by Pedro Domingo Murillo (1757-1810) who was a leader in the La Paz Revolution of 16 July 1809. Spanish troops hanged him and others the following January. Bolivia achieved independence from Spain on 6 August 1825, the last country in Latin America to do so. Today, La Paz’s main square is named Plaza Murillo. La Paz (elev.3,240m/11,942ft) was founded in the Andes by the Spaniards in 1548 in a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River. The administrative capital of Bolivia shifted to La Paz in 1898 while Sucre remained the constitutional and judiciary capital.
