English: Łódź - Prison of the Provincial Office of Public Security
Sterlinga 16/18 A tenement house erected around 1900 served as a prison several times. In the years 1945-1956, the WUBP prison in Łódź was located here. It consisted of two three-story buildings with 53 cells and 5 sick rooms. Living conditions were very difficult. During this period thousands of prisoners, mainly activists and soldiers of the Polish independence underground, passed through the cells of the prison. Interviews were made of prisoners who were not transported to the WUBP headquarters for fear of attempting to escape. Interrogations were cruel, many people did not survive them. Death sentences were carried out here. We know of more than one hundred executions, adjudicated by the communist Military District Court as a result of judicial crimes. Among those murdered by the WSR, there were Ludwik Danielak and Józef Ślęzak - soldiers of the Polish Underground Army, Stanisław Dziedzic and Jan Kaczmarek - soldiers of the National Armed Forces. In 1955, the prison received the status of Central Prison. In 1964, it was liquidated and the building was designated as the headquarters of the District Court. Later in its walls housed the Lodz University of Technology, and now there is a medical clinic.
Wśród zamordowanych wyrokiem WSR byli m.in. Ludwik Danielak i Józef Ślęzak - żołnierze Konspiracyjnego Wojska Polskiego, Stanisław Dziedzic i Jan Kaczmarek - żołnierze Narodowych Sił Zbrojnych. |
