Description
English: Detail of a Romanesque Revival reliquary chest in the Treasury of the Basilica of Saint Servatius in Maastricht, Netherlands. The design of this shrine is based on a set of four gabled panels, formerly in this church, now in the Royal Museums of Art and History (Cinquantenaire Museum) in Brussels, Belgium. These panels had been used as reliquaries of four bishops of Tongeren-Maastricht: Valentinus, Candidus, Monulph and Gondulph. The 12th-century original panels were displayed with the reliquary chest of Saint Servatius (Noodkist). This particular detail of the roof shows two angels with a speech scroll indicating that this shrine contains relics of (among others) Saint Candidus.
