Summary edit

Description
English: The Maytham Houses, 71 Symphony Circle (left) and 26 Richmond Avenue (right), Buffalo, New York, November 2019. Built by an unknown architect in the Queen Anne style and featuring a turret with an unusual bell-shaped roof, these two adjoining residences were the homes of Edward C. (1850-1922) and Captain Thomas Maytham (1841-1893), a pair of brothers who were prominent in the local maritime industry as owners and operators of a line of tugboats playing Buffalo Harbor as well as the passenger ferry between Buffalo and Fort Erie, and as investors in schooners and other maritime interests on the Great Lakes as well as the high seas. Later owners included Herbert White, a North Tonawanda lumber magnate who joined the two houses together into one; Edward L. Hengerer, son of William Hengerer of local department store fame; the El-Nathan home for aged and infirm women, and from the late 1960s through 2003, the offices of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. It's now once again a private residence.
