Description
English: St. Gallen Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in the city of St. Gallen, Switzerland. It is a part of a larger monastery complex comprising of the Cathedral of St.Gall, the abbey library and the surrounding monastery buildings - in short the St.Gallen Abbey District.

The complex is widely considered to be one of the last great sacred structures of the Baroque era and was recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1983.

It stands where the Irish wandering monk Gallus built a hermitage in 612. The cathedral and the baroque monastery complex were built in the middle of the 18th century. In 1805, the newly founded canton of St. Gallen abolished the monastery and transferred the administration of church property to the Catholic denomination.
