English: El Adobe de Capistrano is a restaurant located at 31891 Camino Capistrano in San Juan Capistrano, California. The building was orignally two adobes, the northern one was built in 1797 as the home of Miguel Yorba, and the southern one was established in 1812 as the the Juzgado (court and jails); it was also used as a post office, store, and stage depot. In 1910, Harry and Georgia Mott Vander Leck joined the two adobe buildings together, and added wings to each, to be their residence and store. The El Adobe restaurant was opened in the building in 1948 by Clarence Brown. The building was remodeled in 2003. The restaurant was a favorite of President Richard Nixon, a resident of nearby San Clemente. (Sources: San Juan Capistrano Historical Society and restaurant website) |
