Italiano: LA CHIESA E ORATORIO CONFRATERNALE DI SANTA MARIA DEGLI ANGELI
Sorge lungo la cinta muraria della città di fronte all’ampia distesa di mare in cui si trova l’Isola di Sant’Andrea con il suo faro pronto a guidare i pescatori. Tutto ebbe inizio quando la famiglia Lubelli di Serrano portò a Gallipoli il culto della Madonna della Grotta o di Carpignano erigendo altare nella Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista. Tale culto è legato al ritrovamento (1568) nella grotta di San Giovanni a Carpignano Salentino di un’immagine bizantina raffigurante la Madonna con Bambino. Successivamente nel 1663 fu fatto obbligo di erigere un oratorio entro il termine di due anni intitolato proprio alla Vergine Santissima di Carpignano nella quale si potessero congregare li fratelli foresi e pescatori a far le loro orationi, mortificazioni, ascoltar la Messa e frequentar li Santissimi Sacramenti. Una volta eretto il nuovo oratorio fu intitolato però a Santa Maria degli Angeli aggregando laici del ceto dei pescatori e contadini ai quali dal 1769 si aggiunsero anche le categorie degli artisti e degli artigiani.
