English: THE WANGKANG MONUMENT - MELAKA. MALAYSIA
This Wangkang Granite was successfully erected on Monday 9 November 2020 at 4.44 p.m. in Melaka Gateway, Pulau Melaka, Melaka, Malaysia. The Wangkang Granite resembled an ancient Chinese ship and is the newest monument in Melaka. The monument consisted of 3 parts: Base Block, Pillar Block and The Ship. The total weight is about 27 tonnes. Wangkang is a combination of 2 words, Wang and kang. Wang means King or the diety, Ong Yah and kang means ship to the local Baba Nyonya and Hokkien community in Melaka. The origin of Wangkang is in Fujian, Xiamen, China. (598 LvCuoLi, LvCuo Village, Xike Town, Tong'an District, Xiamen City, Fujian Province, China 中国福建省厦门市同安区西柯镇吕厝村吕厝里598号) Wangkang Ceremony is a rare and unique intangible heritage preserved by the Chinese emigrants from Fujian province, China who came to the then, Malacca. Wangkang Ceremony designed to get rid "the world of evil" has been recognized as a National Heritage (Warisan Kebangsaan) be the Malaysian Government in 2017. Wangkang Ceremony is organized to collect wandering souls, evil spirits and other negative elements in the streets of Melaka. The evil spirits and wandering souls are thought to be responsible for epidemic scourges and chaos that plague the world. On the last day of the ceremony, the Wangkang is burned and the spirits is sent into the unknown and thereafter, devotees hope it will bring health, peace, prosperity and happiness to the world and Melaka, in particular. As recorded in The Malacca Guardian newspaper (Nov 26, 1933), Wangkangs have been organized during troubled times such as in 1905 (the Russian-Japanese war and the Chinese boycott of American goods) and in 1919 (when a global flu epidemic broke out after World War I). In 1933, Wangkang Ceremony was performed when the world faced The Great Depression and in 2001, Wangkang Ceremony was again performed when the SARS epidemic jeopardized tourism in Melaka. In 2012 Wangkang Ceremony was conducted when H1N1 started to spread. On 31st December 2017, the deity, Ong Yah has appointed Baba Dato Ronald Gan to lead the Wangkang Ceremony again for the year 2020. The Wangkang 2020 is burned on Sunday 15 November 2020 within the Wangkang Monument in Melaka Gateway, Pulau Melaka, Melaka. Message to perform the Wangkang Ceremony is delivered through a small sedan chair by the deity, Ong Yah to the temple committee members. |
