Description
English: Visitors to Washington Park in Albany, New York on a May 2022 afternoon mill around the 1893 statue Moses Smiting the Rock while awaiting the beginning of the 5:30 PM Tulip Tour, the last one of the season before the official start of the 2022 Tulip Festival. A work of New York sculptor John Massey Rhind, the statue is a commission of J. Howard King who bequeathed $20,000 for its construction as a memorial to his father, banking magnate Rufus Howard King (1794-1967; not to be confused with the similarly named former U.S. Vice-President), hence its alternate name, the King Memorial Fountain. Atop a boulder taken from Storm King Mountain on the Hudson River is placed a 3,800-pound, larger-than-life bronze likeness of Moses with staff held triumphantly aloft, having smitten the Rock of Horeb to provide drinking water for the Israelites as told in Exodus 17:6. Surrounding Moses as the base of the rock are a quartet of smaller figures, including a maiden with water jug in hand (left) and a thin beaded man with arms outstretched (right), representative of youth and old age respectively. As seen on a May 2022 evening.
