Deutsch: Ottilie W. Roederstein zeigt ihre Freundin und spätere Lebensgefährtin Elisabeth H. Winterhalter am Schreibtisch. Die Schreibfeder in der Hand, das aufgeschlagene Buch, ein Schädel und eine Glasphiole sowie weitere Bücher im Regal weisen Winterhalter als Naturwissenschaftlerin und Medizinerin aus. Sie studierte seit 1885 Medizin in der liberalen Schweiz, genauer in Zürich. Die auffallende Ähnlichkeit der Komposition zu Gelehrtenporträts der Renaissance, beispielsweise zum Bildnis des Erasmus von Rotterdam von Hans Holbein dem Jüngeren, ist von Roederstein bewusst gewählt. Damit unterscheidet sich das Gemälde von dem im 19. Jahrhundert üblichen Typus des eleganten und pompös ausgestatteten Damenporträts. Es drückt in selbstbewusster Art und Weise den Anspruch auf Bildung und Gleichberechtigung in einer von Männern dominierten Gesellschaft aus. Denn in weiten Teilen Europas war Frauen noch bis zur Jahrhundertwende der Zugang zu den Universitäten verwehrt. |
