English:
Charles Jouette Mitchell, M. D. Dr. Charles Mitchell, born in Frankfurt, Kentucky and educated at Transylvania University, New York College of Medicine, and Paris, France, was a nephew of President Jefferson Davis. He was first married to Mary Lucinda Davis, daughter of Joseph Emory Davis of Hurricane Plantation, and following her depth he married Lucinda Bradford, daughter of Amanda Davis Bradford, who was the President's sister. Following the war he practiced medicine in Vicksburg and died of pneumonia in 1886. He is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg. This painting of Dr. Mitchell was done by an unknown artist and was given to the museum by a relative, Mrs. Columbia Mitchell, in 1964. Restoration of the painting in 1977 was made possible by two of Dr. Mitchell's great-great-grandchildren, Lise Mitchell Kerrigan Kuebel and John Esmond Kerrigan Jr., and the Vicksburg and Warren County Historical Society. |
