Description

Whilst the busiest freight route in Estonia is the line from Tallinn (primarily from Muuga docks) towards the Russian border at Narva, there is some freight activity through Tartu to Koidula and Valga.

An "over the fence" shot of ex-Union Pacific loco no. 1501 built by General Electric in the mid-1980s. Importing a large batch of locos from the USA to replace the older Soviet built locos was largely the idea of Ed Burkhart who chaired the newly set up privatised freight carrier in Estonia. The private operation didn't last long and was renationalised by the Estonian Government to become EVR Cargo. Subsequently, it has been rebranded Operail.

Many of the imported locos have been put into store or withdrawn following a reduction in freight traffic in Estonia.
