English:
Amherst in Canada Originally thought to depict Jeffery Amherst at Louisbourg in 1758, this painting is now believed to be Amherst's brother, William, at the Battle of Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland. Lieutenant Colonel William Amherst (1732 - 1781) led British forces to victory over the French on September 15, 1762. This was the final battle in the North American theater of the Seven Years' War. |
