English: New Zealand soldier Jim Dempsey from Bren Carrier Platoon, 24 Battalion, at Helwan Camp, Egypt, in 1941. He holds ammunition and a Vickers gun. Photographer unidentified.Note on back of file print reads : Jim Dempsey picked up a Vickers gun in Greece and managed to bring it off with him when he was evacuated. In spite of difficulties the carrier platoon retained possession of this gun until it was lost in action in November 1941. It was used to good effect at Sidi Resegh. The well known photograph reproduced on the back cover of the official survey "Campaign in Greece" shows Demsey with his gun. The belts of ammunition hanging over his shoulders were recuited for the purposes of the photograph and are Browning, not Vickers ammunition.
