Description 26-G-1991: Operation Avalanche, Invasion of Salerno, Italy, September 1943. Jewish Coast Guardsman Guards Nazi Prisoners. A Jewish Coast Guardsman from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, guards two slightly wounded Nazi prisoners on board a U.S. Coast Guard manned combat transport off Salerno, Italy. The Coast Guardsman is Gunner’s Mate Third Class Bernard Leshner. The prisoners are members of the Sixteenth Panzer Division, captured in the Battle of Salerno. (5/19/2015).
