Inaugurado en 1752 y diseñado por Juan Vergel y Francisco Llovet, el palacio sustituyó al antiguo edificio de madera que acogía la Capitanía coruñesa desde 1582, y su coste para los gallegos fue un impuesto de un maravedí por cada azumbre de vino que se cosechase en la región. La estructura interior del edificio responde a la doble intención con la que fue creado, pues hasta el siglo XIX, el Capitán General era el encargado tanto de las responsabilidades militares de cada región como de impartir justicia. Por eso el edificio de la Ciudad Vieja tiene dos puertas. Por este mismo motivo el palacio cuenta con un campanario. La existencia de esta estructura y la planta de su patio central lleva a muchos visitantes a la confusión de creer que el edificio puede tratarse de un antiguo monasterio, pero el campanario es únicamente un símbolo de poder, no de carácter religioso. Precisamente el patio del recinto, de estilo neoclásico y presidido por sendos bustos de bronce -de Juan Carlos I y de Fernando VI Los pisos superiores del edificio albergan la zona noble del palacio, esas que solo que utilizan para celebraciones como la Pascua Militar. El llamado pasillo de los espejos alberga una colección de pintura barroca, cedida por Museo del Prado, y mobiliario tan distinguido como lámparas de la granja y espejos antiguos, y desemboca en la sala del trono, la habitación con más contenido simbólico del recinto. En esta estancia el Capitán General celebra, cada 6 de enero, la recuperación de Menorca al ejército inglés en 1782. |
