| Description | 330-PS-979 (USN 709059): Transfer of U.S. Cruisers to Brazil under MDAP. Ceremonies marking the completion of negotiations between the United States Navy and the Navy of Brazil for the transfer of light cruisers, in connection with Hemisphere Defense Plans, took place today in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy John T. Kohehler, (right). Rear Admiral E. Araujo, representing the Brazilian government (left) signed for the purchase of the light cruisers USS Philadelphia (CL 41) and USS St. Louis (CL 49). Secretary Koheler signed for the U.S. Navy. These cruisers were first commissioned in September 1937 and May 1938, respectively. USS Philadelphia, Brooklyn Class, displaced 97,000 tons and was 608 feet in length. USS St. Louis, one of two cruisers of the type, had a displacement of 10,000 t9ons and was 608 feet in length. Photograph released January 9, 1951. Philadelphia served as Barroso (C-11) and was scrapped in 1973. St. Louis served as Almirante Tamandare until 1976, she sank in 1980 while under tow to be scrapped. (6/30/2015). |
