Description 330-PSA-283-61 (USN 710990): Commander George William Ellis, USN, enters the cockpit of the U.S. Navy F4H “Phantom II” fighter in which he set a new class record of 66,443.8 feet for sustained altitude in horizontal flight. Under FAI rules the aircraft achieving this record must leave the 15 to 25 kilometer course at least as fast as a high speed of more than 1400 MPH (MACH 2.263). Commander Ellis is a member of the Flight Test Division of the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Maryland. The Phantom II, built by McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, St. Louis, Missouri, is the Navy’s newest and fastest all-weather fleet fighter. Photograph released December 6, 1961. (9/29/2015).
