Description
English: 330-PS-7373 (USN 667549): U.S. Navy Martin 404 fuselage during survival test. Note special platforms and gear, and the degree of nose to tail in the water, May 24, 1955. Master Caption: Getting passengers quickly and safely out of the airplanes ditched on the ocean will be the subject of studies by the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA), the aviation industry, and the Navy and Coast Guard, June 14-24, 1955, at Norfolk, Virginia. Using a Martin 404 fuselage, modified by the Norfolk Naval Air Station, to represent an average transport plane, the CAA and Navy will use 80 passengers each in the two tests to study the best methods of evacuating planes in emergencies. A Martin fuselage was equipped with four flotation tanks which were fitted at the stub end of each wing and nose of the fuselage. (3/4/2015).
