Description
English: 330-PS-8299 (USN 1010779): Close up view of the Zuni Rocket. Folding fins permit four of the rockets to be mounted in a launcher instead of one. Zuni hits hard, fast and accurately. Master caption: A new five-inch high velocity rocket, named the Zuni after the Pueblo Indian Tribe of western New Mexico, has been approved for operational use in the U.S. fleet. It will replace the World War II high velocity altitude rocket (HVAR) in new high-performance aircraft. The Zuni is a folding fin, solid-propellant rocket, designed for use on fighter and attack-type aircraft and for both air-to-ground and air-to-air attack. As an air-to-ground weapon, it will be highly effective against tanks, pillboxes, gun emplacements, trains, ammunition and fuel dumps and small ships. As an air-to-air weapon, its high velocity and short time to target promises a high kill potential against aircraft. Zuni was developed for the U.S. Navy’s Bureau of Ordnance by Naval Ordnance Test Station, China Lake, California. Photograph released March 29, 1957. (1/29/2015).
