Description
English: 330-PS-9101 (USN 1037081): ZPG-2 Makes Historic Polar Flight. On August 12, 1958, a U.S. Navy ZPG-2 airship landed at the U.S. Naval Air Station, South Weymouth, Massachusetts, after completing an historic polar flight designed to test the feasibility of using blimps for logistic support and for future research projects in the Arctic. The flight, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, departed South Weymouth on July 26th and traveled August 8th across Canada to Ice Island “T-3”, 500 miles from the North Pole. This is the farthest North that any U.S. Navy blimp has ever flown, and according to Captain H.B. Van Gorder, Commanding Officer of the Expedition, there is no question of blimp’s suitability for Arctic Operations, August 14, 1948. Crew of the Arctic Blimp.
