English: 330-PS-9366 (428-GX-USN 710370): U.S. Navy Sidewinders to be used by Royal Swedish Air Forces. Mounted on the Royal Swedish Air Force J-35 “Dragon”, the U.S. Navy’s air-to-air guided missile sidewinder will become standard armament in the Royal Swedish Air Force, it was announced today. Purchase agreements signed by Major General Torsten B. Rapp, RSAF, Assistant Chief of Staff for Air Materal, Royal Swedish Air Force, and Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, USN, Chief of Naval Operations, will provide the Swedish Air Force with a weapon of considerably wider range than its present rockets and cnanons. The sidewinder is a heat-seeking or infrared device which seeks its target by homing on heat emitted by the target’s engines. The missile is nine feet long and is designed to destroy high-performance aircraft flying at altititudes from sea leavel to more than 50,000 feet. The sidewinder is the first guided missile to have ever destroyed an enemy aircraft under actualy combat conditions when it was successfully employed by the Chinsese Nationalists during the Quemoy Crisis of 1958. Photograph released February 17, 1959. (10/21/2014). |
