Summary edit

Description Sand boils occur when seepage beneath a levee occurs on the landside of the levee. The 5th Louisiana District Board places sand bags around the boil to raise the water surface above the boil to increase water pressure. Increasing the pressure slows the speed of the water flow and reduces its ability to move sand and clay. (Photo by Howard Zeigler)
