Description 80-G-46239: On behalf of his son, Sergeant Herbert J. Thomas, USMC, who sacrificed his life on Bougainville on November 7, 1943, to save the lives of other Marines, Herbert Thomas receives from Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal the Medal of Honor at Washington, D.C. Present at the ceremony honoring the dead Marine, who unhesitatingly smothered a “live” grenade with his own body to protect the rest of his squad. Left to right: Audrey I.
