Description

80-G-496014: USS DD-224 (ex-USS Stewart, DD-224). Photographed circa Autumn 1945. Though the original caption identifies the location as Pearl Harbor, the background terrain and state of the ship's paintwork indicates that it was taken in Japanese waters, perhaps prior to her 29 October 1945 recommissioning for the voyage to the United States.

In 1943-1945, the ship served as the Japanese Navy's Patrol Boat 102. She was recovered by the U.S. Navy after the end of World War II. Note the Japanese flag painted on her midships superstructure side, with "P102" showing faintly below. She carries Japanese radar antennas atop her pilothouse (a two-horn Mark 2, Model 2) and abaft her foremast (a ladder-shaped Type 3, Mark 1, Model 3). Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
